Heluva Cheese Plant To Close

A packaging plant for Heluva Good Cheese in Wayne County will be closed by fall.

The facility in Sodus is described as a “cut and wrap” operation, not a manufacturing operation.

Parent company HP Hood is closing the Sodus plant, laying off 53 workers and six others who ran the Heluva Good country store. The company says it wasn’t economically viable to keep the cutting and packaging in Wayne County.

Spokesperson Lynne Bohan says that "Heluva Good dips and cheeses will continue to be marketed, and consumers will still be able to find both Heluva Good branded cheeses and dips in their local retail stores."

She says the company is working with employees impacted by the layoffs to help them with the transition.

Heluva Good chees and dips will still be sold, but will be licensed to an employee-run company called Schreiber Foods, which describes itself as one of the largest dairy companies in the world.
