Hart's Local Grocers Makes Its Debut

http://youtu.be/gTska-MTFmQ

Downtown Rochester has a supermarket again for the first time in more than a decade.

A couple of hundred people gathered for the opening of Hart’s Local Grocers, on Winthrop Street in the East End on Friday morning. At 20,000 square feet, the store  is smaller than a traditional supermarket, but one which founder Glen Kellogg believes will fill a niche in that neighborhood and the surrounding area.

He is focusing a lot on locally sourced products, and figures that with more and more housing being established in that area, they'll get a lot of people who just want to walk to their grocery store.

"I think we're going to get a surprising amount of foot traffic, there are a lot of people who live within a quarter mile of here, and apparently the grove place association has a competition on who has the coolest wagon or cart to come to the grocery story with."

Before the store even opened, Allan Davidson was on line. He actually got there at about 6:00 a.m. He's made a habit of attending grand openings around the Rochester area in recent years, but he says the Hart's opening was a bit more meaningful for him.

"This one is a very special one to me because about 63 years ago, my first job that I ever had was a bag boy at the Star supermarket on Park Avenue, and as well all know, when Hart's left, Star (Markets) took over, so it's sort of reliving the past for me."

The store is smaller than the traditional supermarket, and it's located in the spot that used be occupied by Craig Autometrics.

Harts will be open seven days a week from 7am to 9pm
