The 1,700 drivers on the west side of Monroe County who cross Sandy Creek in Hamlin on Route 19 every day will see a detour beginning Monday.
The state DOT is replacing the 55-year old bridge.
In a statement to WXXI, NYS DOT Commissioner Joan McDonald said a short traffic detour will help crews finish the project efficiently.
“We strive to keep traffic impacts to a minimum and -- in this case -- determined that a short detour during construction is the most efficient way to progress.”
Construction could take a year.
The DOT says the $1.1 million project includes repairing the bridge abutments and pier, reconstructing the roadway approaches, and replacing structural steel and the concrete bridge deck.
A new parking lot for fishing access will be built at the northwest corner of the bridge.
A posted detour directs motorists to use N. Hamlin Road, Lake Road West Fork and Moscow Road.
The construction contractor for the project is Ramsey Constructors, of Lakeville, Livingston County.
