The state broke ground Thursday on a year-round nature center at Letchworth State Park.

Officials gathered at that park, which straddles Livingston and Wyoming Counties, to mark the development of a $6.75 million facility.

It will feature new educational and interpretive programs for the 650,000 Letchworth gets each year.

The new Nature Center will span five thousand square feet and will include interactive exhibits and a butterfly garden.

There is a  fundraising campaign as part of the project which is trying to raise more than two million dollars as an endowment to ensure the ongoing operation of the center.

Earlier this year, Letchworth State Park and SUNY Geneseo announced a partnership aimed at providing greater hands-on educational experiences and research  opportunities at the new nature center.

It is slated to open in the spring of next year.
