As the U-S Supreme Court hears arguments in a case which could determine whether domestic abusers can have guns, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand is pushing legislation to close some loopholes and protect the survivors.

She says domestic abuse is a violent crime, that in too many cases can lead to murder.

"But when a gun is involved, the problem is even worse.  When a gun is in the home, domestic violence is actually five times more likely to lead to murder."

Gillibrand says current federal law prevents any domestic abuser with a permanent restraining order from having a gun -- but it doesn't apply to those with a temporary restraining order.

She says the Lori Jackson Domestic Survivor Protection Act would fix this.

The other bill, the Domestic Violence Gun Homicide Protection Act, would give states new resources to protect domestic violence victims from gun violence.

Gillibrand says no violent domestic abuser should be allowed to own a gun.
