Senator Gillibrand held a round table discussion about gun legislation at the Thomas P. Ryan Community Center in Rochester.
Gillibrand met with Rochester Police Officers and other law enforcement, city council members, residents and advocates. Also in attendance were mothers and other family members of victims of gun violence.
Gillibrand says she hoped to learn from them.
"Families can give us guide about what we can do to make sure no one else has to experience the horrific moments we've experienced because of the loss of our loved ones. I think parents also can give guidance about what they think can be done to keep communities safe and that's really what the purpose of this round table is."
Gillibrand is introducing a bill that will make gun trafficking a federal offense, and create stricter penalties for it.
"New York particularly is plagued with weapons being bought in the south, coming up I-95, and unloaded into our communities straight into the hands of gang members."
Gillibrand says this bill can be a first step toward sensible gun legislation.
