Getting Out the Vote

Voters are headed to the polls today in local elections.

Races include Monroe County Executive, County Legislature, various town races, and Rochester City Council and School Board, among others.

WXXI news caught up with several voters casting their ballot at a polling place on Thomas Avenue in West Irondequoit.

Most said they were just doing their civic duty.

But for Joan Williams, politics is definitely local.

"I wanted to make sure that the town supervisor got enough votes to stay in and just show support."

She says this gives her the opportunity to voice her opinion.

Jim Miller of Irondequoit feels the same way.

"Well, the fact that anybody who doesn't vote doesn't have a voice to complain about what's going on. This really is our right, and there are an awful lot of places in this world that don't even have this right."

Voter Rebecca Budinger says she's not motivated to vote by one particular candidate or issue.

"I just think it's what you do, people worked hard to get us the ability to vote, and I think it's what your supposed to do."

Elections officials were projecting turnout around 40 percent today.
