The Geneva School Board has decided to send a reduced budget back to voters on June 16th.
Geneva was the only area budget not to pass on May 19. Because that budget had exceeded a state tax cap formula, a super-majority of 60 percent voter approval was needed, and the final vote count fell just short of that.
The new proposal is about $40,000 less. The new budget contains a tax levy increase that still exceeds the cap, so 60 percent approval is still necessary for it to pass.
Geneva school officials say if this new budget is not approved, they would have to operate on a contingency budget, and that would mean there would be consequences such as no free community use of facilities and athletic fields, no capital project for general maintenance and possibly the elimination of JV Sports and reductions to the music department.
Before the June 16th re-vote there will be a hearing on June 4, at 7 p.m. in the high school library.
