Gastric Band Less Popular than Other Weight Loss Surgeries

webmd.com

One local doctor is surprised New Jersey Governor Chris Christie opted for gastric band surgery to lose weight.
Director of the Bariatric Surgery Center at Highland Hospital, Dr. William O'Malley, says that procedure is a distant third in the Rochester area behind the gastric bypass and the increasingly popular sleeve gastrectomy.
Dr. O'Malley says the gastric band is permanent and requires more maintenance.
He says there is more potential risk with the gastric band because it has the highest reoperation rate of all the weight-loss surgeries.
O'Malley adds for the morbidly obese, weight-loss surgery has proven to be far more effective compared to non-surgical treatment.
