Gas Prices Continue to Climb

We're paying more at the pump, but that's to be expected this time of year.

That's according to AAA, which released its weekly update on gas prices Monday.

Public Affairs manager for AAA in Central and Western New York, Elizabeth Carey, says the average around Rochester is $1.96 a gallon.

That's up a nickel the past seven days.

The national average jumped about 13 cents from last week.

"Definitely we're seeing those national prices increase, and the regional ones following."

Carey says prices generally do move up this time of year, as refineries undergo maintenance and plan to make the seasonal switchover to summer blend gasoline.

She adds the lower price of crude oil, along with abundant supplies should keep a ceiling on how high gas prices go in the coming months.

Triple A doesn't expect gas to top $3 dollars a gallon at all this year.

A year ago, gas averaged $2.59 in Rochester.

The highest recorded average price here was $4.25 a gallon in July, 2008.
