Garth Fagan, the Tony-Award winning choreographer whose home and dance studio is in Rochester, was honored over the weekend at his alma mater, Wayne State University in Detroit, where he received this year's Apple Award.

The award is named for Sarah Applebaum Nederlander and provides for a nationally prominent theatre professional to visit the Wayne State University campus to instruct and interact with the Department of Theatre and Dance through a lecture, question and session, and master class.

Previous recipients of the Apple Award include Neil Simon, Carol Channing, Marvin Hamlisch, Tom Skerritt, Elaine Stritch, Mandy Patinkin, and Patti Lupone, among others.

Fagan received the Apple Award Saturday night.
