wrvo.org

The death of veteran TV journalist Garrick Utley is generating comments from people who he worked with in Upstate New York.

It was announced on Friday that the longtime reporter has died of cancer at the age of 74.

Utley had a long and storied career, beginning with his work at NBC News in 1963, reporting from more than 70 countries including the early years of the Vietnam War.

In later years, he moderated ``Meet the Press,” as well as other NBC programs. Later, Utley reported for ABC and CNN.

As part of an eclectic background, Utley, an opera buff, was also a host of PBS' Live FromThe Met. "

Utley spent much of last year producing a documentary for WRVO radio in Oswego, called “New York in the World," which followed the rise and fall of New York's economy over the last century. That documentary aired on WXXI Radio  last summer.

Utley also taught journalism courses for SUNY Oswego, and School President Deborah Stanley released a statement which said that, “Garrick always fully engaged with his students and colleagues” and she also said that “We will miss his eminently wise and kind presence among us.”
