This weekend a free mammography event is schedule to ensure more women detect breast cancer early.
This Saturday Cancer Services Program of Monroe County will provide free mammography at two clinics: Highland Breast Imaging and Strong West in Brockport.
Director Candice Lucas told WXXI 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime, but the disease has a 98 percent survival rate when it’s found early.
“We want women to live long, healthy lives and if we can find it early and take care of it that's what we want to do,” said Lucas.
According to Lucas, the organization plans to walk women through the process—with financial assistance for follow up care.
“So, this is not something where we just find it and leave them to worry about payment. We try to take care of it from beginning to end,” she said.
If necessary, case managers will be on site to enroll women in the Medicaid Cancer Treatment Program.
The free mammography clinic is by appointment and runs from 8 to noon on Saturday. Appointments can be made by calling 224-3070.
