In the month of November, one of the area's most active food pantries saw an even greater demand for meals.
Dom Lucisano, director of the Hope Food Pantry in Greece, said they served about 30 percent more families than they did last November.
Lucisano says food insecurity can be a middle class, suburban problem as well as an inner city problem. "There are fast food restaurants and coffee shops open anywhere. You can get a minimum wage job just about anywhere. Where are you going on minimum wage?"
He says they're especially concerned about senior citizens.
"Because they were brought up with that mentality to not ask for help, suffer in silence. That's been our greatest concern; how to get senior citizens to understand that this is not a handout. We're just trying to help."
The Hope Food Pantry, which is located at the Hope Lutheran Church, just received a $4,000 grant from DuPont.
