Feel The Groove, It's Record Store Day

musicstack.com

If you are a record collector, Saturday is a big day at local stores.

Your favorite store will have special events, live music and appearances to make the annual "record store day" special.

Tom Kohn has owned The Bop Shop for 33 years. His store is now on Monroe Avenue in Brighton. "Most people that come in here are just going to be filling holes in their collection."

In May 2014 Kohn got a call about a special collection of vinyl. He put it aside to offer for sale this weekend. The LPs are from the late Doug Meech, the drummer for Rochester's Chesterfield Kings. Kohn calls the collection "breathtaking."

"Even the old, sixties, 13th floor elevators records and all the psych and garage records of the 60s and 70s. Amazing soul LPs. Amazing soul LPs. All, really unplayed."

Kohn had to clear a lot of space to display the collection, which he estimates at nearly four-thousand records. Kohn says Meech was inspired by the old garage band sound and soul music.

"The first Clash record is in here. The UK pressing. It was like the day - I bought it when it came out...it's kind of a flashback to '77 when I bought that record. Here it is, intact, in perfect shape."

He's not alone in celebrating record store day. All local shops plan special concerts and events.
