Federal Reserve Bank of NY: Difficult Times for Manufacturing Sector

npr.org

The manufacturing sector in New York is experiencing some difficulties.

That's according officials at the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, which has just released its Empire State Manufacturing Index, which has declined for the 4th consecutive month.

Senior economist Richard Deitz says this was a pretty weak report.

"We had a string of negative readings like this back in 2012, but other than that, it's been a while since we've seen readings this negative for this long."

Deitz says it's a result of the combination of a strong U-S dollar -- which has impacted the ability of manufacturers to sell their products abroad -- along with weaker global markets in recent weeks.

He adds employment levels are also falling, and factories cut jobs for the third straight month.

New orders also fell, but at a slower pace.

Deitz adds the only positive in the survey was that manufacturers weren't terribly pessimistic about future conditions.
