Fatal Shooting Near A Rochester School

TWC News

Rochester Police have now identified the man shot to death Friday morning on Otis Street. He is 38 year old Efrain Orta Jr. of the city.

It happened around 9:30  not far from School 54. And it turns out that Orta is the father of two students from that school, a fourth grader and a sixth grader. A letter from the school principal says that he died at their home.

Deputy Police Chief Scott Peters says this happened while an officer was nearby directing traffic for the start of school, and heard several gunshots.

"And the fact that a police officer was standing a block and a half away, yes, audacity is the correct word. There's a lot of leads that we're tracking down right now, very confident that we'll be able to a conclusion with this, but I can't really release too many details."

Orta was found on the steps of a house on Otis Street and a motorcycle was found overturned on the driveway.

That elementary school was put in a ‘lockout’ situation, where entry to the school was limited for security reasons, but that condition was lifted in about 45 minutes.

The school is providing counseling for children who need it.
