Police in the village of Fairport have lost their leader.
The death of Chief Maureen Chisholm was shared on the department's Facebook page:
"It is with an extremely heavy heart that the Fairport Police Department is announcing the passing of Police Chief Maureen Chisholm, after being a survivor of leukemia for the past 12 years.
Chief Chisholm joined the Fairport Police Department in 2008 as the Police Chief after a highly decorated career at the Monroe County Sheriff's Office, retiring as a Major.
Chief Chisholm was the first female Police Chief in the history of Monroe County. Although not a Fairport native, she made our community her adopted home.
Chief Chisholm embraced our community and tirelessly provided her distinguished service for our safety.
She was a true public servant and she will be truly missed . . . Goodbye Chief Chisholm."
The department says information on funeral services will be announced later this week.
