Events Around Rochester on Martin Luther King Day

A Martin Luther King, Jr. Day tradition continues at Garth Fagan Dance.

The company hosts the annual day of dancing at celebration at Garth Fagan Dance on Chestnut Street. Classes run throughout the day for age groups ranging from 5 to 7 to those over 30. There's more at garthfagandance.org.

A community-wide interfaith worship service will be held today at Kodak Hall at Eastman Theatre.

The Reverend Dr. Marvin A. McMickle, new president of the Colgate Rochester Divinity School, will lead the service which starts at 9 this morning.

The City of Rochester is presenting a number of activities to mark the Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday:

--Open basketball for children 12 and under at the Adams Street and Campbell St. Community Centers,  starting at 11am.  An MLK dinner follows at three o'clock this afternoon.

--From noon until four it's a 4-on-4 basketball tournament at the Carter Street Community Center.

--The Avenue D Community Center hosts a cook-off at noon.

--At 1pm, an essay and poem contest will be held at the David Gantt Community Center on North Street.

--At 2pm a MLK/Civil Rights Film Festival and discussion will be held at the Thomas P. Ryand Community Center on Webster Avenue

--At 1pm a MLK Essay and Drawing Contest for children age 8 to 16 at the Edgerton Community Center on Backus St.

--At 3pm  it's African-American Bingo and and MLK Essay Contest at the Flint Street Community Center in Rochester.

The City of Rochester is hosting "Skate to Commemorate" at the Manhattan Square Park ice rink,  an event commemorating the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The event will be held at noon, 1:50pm and 3:40pm.

People are encouraged to donate to charities or bring new personal hygiene or other household products in lieu of an admission charge.

Members of the Rochester Americans hockey team will also be there to skate with fans between noon and 1pm.

Rochester's 19th Ward presents its 6th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Luminary Evening, starting at sunset tonight in the Plymouth Avenue and Exchange Boulevard neighborhood.

Many homeowners in the area will light luminaries in their front yard to illustrate one of the goals of Dr. King's life: connecting all people through community spirit, friendship and mutual respect.

Nazareth College is marking Martin Luther King, Jr. day today with some special events. At 11:30, a celebration of Dr. King will be held on campus at the Linehan Chapel of the Golisano Academic Center with speakers, students, inspirational readings and dance.  

The theme of the event is King's "Drum Major Instinct" speech. Then at 430 this afternoon, Charles W. Eagles, professor of history at the University of Mississippi will speak at the Callahan Theatre, followed by a question and answer session. Eagles is the author of several books about the Civil Rights movement.
