The College at Brockport will benefit from a federal grant designed to help protect wetlands along the shores of the Great Lakes.

The EPA has awarded a $10 million, five year grant to Central Michigan University to continue implementation of the EPA's Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Monitoring program.

The project team includes The College at Brockport which will use about $1.2 million of the grant money to monitor wetlands along the shores of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie.

EPA Regional Administrator Judith Enck says the funding will be used to gather data that will help identify areas where wetlands need better protection, which will allow for more targeted efforts at preservation and restoration.

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter, who is co-chair of the Great Lakes Task Force, says the coastal wetland monitoring is critcal in measuring the overall health and vitality of the Great Lakes.
