Monroe County health officials are not issuing any specific guidelines to schools to prevent the Enterovirus.
County Health Department spokesman John Ricci says the advice for school administrators and parents to try to keep the respiratory illness from spreading is the same advice given to prevent colds or the flu.
"And that's thorough and frequent hand washing, cough etiquette - meaning covering your cough and sneezes, disinfecting surfaces, and staying home from work and school if sick with either diarrheal illness and or respiratory illness that includes fever."
There have been a dozen confirmed cases of Enterovirus here in Monroe County, but many more are suspected. Ricci says the children who have suffered the most are those who have pre-existing asthma.
"Once in the hospital, they do fine. We haven't had any deaths here or elsewhere associated with this."
