Officials from the University of Rochester are awaiting final approval from the state to open an off-campus Emergency Department at the former Lakeside Hospital in Brockport.

The U of R took over the facility last year, and just last week began operating an urgent care center at the property 24 hours a day.

The plan is to replace urgent care with an Emergency Department on August 4th.

Chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the U of R, Dr. Michael Kamali, says they'll open a facility which will offer emergency care to all patients -- but there are some restrictions.

Critical patients would bypass Strong West and be taken to a full service hospital, instead.

The Strong West facility will also include a same-day surgical center, imaging, labs and other specialty services.

Administrator of Operations for Strong West, Bryan O'Donovan, says the community has been very supportive of efforts to bring back medical services to the former Lakeside facility, which closed in April, 2013.

The U of R completed its acquisition of the facility in August.
