A renowned television and film composer and Eastman School of Music alumnus has won his 5th Emmy Award for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series.

Jeff Beal won the award for Original Dramatic Score for Chapter 63 of the Netflix series House of Cards.  This is Beal's second Emmy for his House of Cards scores.

Beal has taken his House of Cards scores to concert halls around the world.  Other scores he has worked on include his music for HBO series Carnivale and Rome, and a score for the movie Pollock, about the painter Jackson Pollock.

Beal earned a Bachelor of Music degree at the Eastman School of Music in 1985 and with his wife, Joan , who graduated from the Eastman School in 1984, they recently established the new Beal Institute for Film Music and Contemporary Media at Eastman.

Beal says Eastman helped him learn how to be a good composer.

"I also got some opportunties during my time there to do my first assignments as a student of film scoring under Ray Wright, who was my mentor.  So that was also very significant," he said.
