East Irondequoit Tests For Lead Levels In School Water Fixtures

East Irondequoit is the latest area school district to report on testing for lead in its water fixtures.

A note posted on thedistrict websitesays that because of the recent concerns about water quality locally and nationally, the district recently underwent the process of having the water in all buildings tested for lead levels.

800 sources for drinking water were tested throughout school buildings including water fountains, sinks, and showers.

Officials say out of the total samples taken, 65 had levels above federal guidelines. Those fixtures were taken off-line and the district is now consulting with the county health department about next steps, including re-testing and replacing fixtures where necessary.

The state and county health departments do not believe that school drinking water is a significant source of lead, but East Irondequoit officials say they are taking steps they feel are appropriate.
