DOT Drops Expressway Plan

Rochester, NY – The State Transportation Department has decided not to extend the Route 531 Expressway in western Monroe County -- or to widen Route 31 through the towns of Ogden and Sweeden at this time.

Regional DOT Director Kevin O'Buckley says spending $75 million $100 million on those projects doesn't make sense right now. The DOT says it's come to that decision after studying traffic and environmental data on the projects -- as well as their cost. O'Buckley says that study showed other priorities were more important in the regional transportation plan.

The decision means the 531 Expressway won't be extended through to Brockport from its current end at Washington Street.

The DOT will instead work to identify and fix points of traffic congestion along the Route 31 and 531 corridor. They'll start with the expressway-Washington Street intersection.

DOT officials say they'll hold a public meeting Tuesday night at 7:00 at the Oliver Middle School in Brockport to explain their findings.
