Dorothy Styk Will Challenge Mark Johns For State Assembly

Republican Assemblyman Mark Johns is facing Democratic opposition in his re-election bid this fall. Dorothy Styk, a former Monroe County legislator who lost her bid for re-election last fall is challenging Johns in November.

She says the issues she will focus on include many of the same ones she came across when she was a county legislator.

“Veterans benefits, zombie homes, infrastructure problems, people are concerned about their jobs, people want to see their property taxes lowered. I work in a school district; we want to see our public education system taken care of, Styk told WXXI News.

Styk used to be a Republican, and switched parties last fall and ran as a Democrat, losing to Republican Tanya Conley  for the county legislature.  Styk belives she can do better this time around, especially if the turnout is larger.

Stykcriticized Johns for not voting to raise the minimum wage, but he says this is an issue that should be taken up nationally.

"The first minimum wage to nine bucks an hour I voted for, the second minimum wage vote which went to 15, I voted against because it's something that should be done at the federal level. New York State has lost a whole bunch of manufacturing jobs, and we'll lose even more if we don't do it at the national level," Johns told WXXI News.
