Doctor Says, Put Exercise on the List of New Year's Resolutions

If it feels like new, conflicting research aimed at health and science is coming out every month, that's because it is. This obsession with health studies came to a head this past March when a journalist trolled the world by spreading bad chocolate science.

But one of the most prevalent health messages in the last year, that exercise will keep your body and brain in top shape, is valid, according to Doctor Matt Devine. He's the Associate Medical Director at University of Rochester Medicine's Highland Family Medicine.

"Exercising, whatever it may be, doing an activity that raises your heartbeat to a place where you start to sweat and start to work off calories, that releases endorphins."

Those endorphins are powerful, so much so that Devine says they use exercise to help people with drug and alcohol dependency issues overcome their addictions.

A lot of people are going to be making health-related new years resolutions, and Devine says instead of jumping on a fitness bandwagon or starting a trendy diet based on junk science, talk to your doctor about a realistic goal that includes physical exercise, so you're more likely to stick to it.

He says your body, and your brain, will thank you.
