TWC News

(WXXI News & AP) The Orleans County Sheriff’s Department says that they have identified 3 people believed to be responsible for vandalism at a local mosque.

It was reported Thursday night when someone burned two crosses into the lawn of the World Sufi Foundation Mosque in the Town of Carlton.

Deputies say some kind of accelerant was poured into the front lawn of the mosque in the shape of a cross and ignited.

Late Friday afternoon , authorities said that three suspects, all under 21 years old, have been interviewed by investigators and will turn themselves in next Tuesday.

The incident is being treated as a bias crime.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations issued a statement saying that such incidents should be thoroughly investigated by police and the FBI and also repudiated by public and religious leaders
