Dentzel Carousel out of commission for the rest of the season

Monroe County

The historic Dentzel Carousel at Ontario Beach Park will be out of service for the rest of the season.

Last week, Monroe County Parks officials say their staff noticed the 112-year old carousel appeared to be having some problems, and Parks Director Larry Staub says it will take a while to fix it.

“It looks like the issue is with the bearings at the very top and we’re going to have to take a real good look at it, have an engineer come in, and from the looks of it, it might require some extensive repairs, not only that bearing assembly at the very top, but also possibly the mast itself," Staub told WXXI News.

Staub expects the carousel to be back in operation next year. He says it will be worth the time and effort.

“It’s one of the few, hand carved wooden carousels in the United States that is in its original location from the day it was first assembled so that’s a real feather in our cap, and we want to keep it going for generations to come."
