ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ The Department of Environmental Conservation is taking public comment through November 4 on proposed changes to regulations for tank storage of petroleum and hazardous chemicals.
Commissioner Joe Martens says the proposed changes clarify existing requirements. He says the rules should make it easier to comply with equipment and handling standards needed to prevent contamination of soil, groundwater, surface water and public water supplies.
Martens said Wednesday the proposed changes will allow DEC to improve environmental standards while making it easier for the owners and operators of nearly 40,000 facilities in New York to comply.
DEC plans a webinar August 26 to explain the changes, and has scheduled three public meetings in September and three formal public hearings in November.
