A bill requiring labeling for foods made from genetically engineered crops is pending in the New York State legislature.

Supporters are making a final push as the legislative session comes to a close.

Peter Debes, chair of the Rochester regional group of the Sierra Club, says science hasn't determined the safety of genetically modified organisms, or GMO's, and people should have the right to decide if they want to introduce them into their bodies.

He says there's still some uncertainty on how the genetically modified organisms interplay with the normal functioning of the body.

But New York Farm Bureau Steve Ammerman says there's an overwhelming scientific consensus that shows genetically modified foods are safe, and people can choose from many other non-GMO choices that are out there.

He argues the labeling bill will increase costs for consumers, and is not necessary.

A vote on the labeling bill in the state of New York hasn't been scheduled.
