Construction Halted On Lago Casino Resort

TYRE, N.Y. (AP & WXXI News) Construction at the site of a proposed $425 million casino in the Finger Lakes has been suspended after an appeals court voided its local approval plan.

Lago Resort & Casino developer Thomas Wilmot on Monday described the court decision as a ``detour'' and said he is confident the casino will still get a license in the fall.

Wilmot is a Rochester-area developer whose company, Wilmorite, operates the local shopping malls.

The Appellate Division of state Supreme Court on Friday vacated the site plan approval based on a violation of state environmental law by the town board of Tyre, where Lago is located.

Wilmot says construction will be suspended as officials in Tyre determine how to fix the issue. The town's next move was unclear Monday.

Wilmot described the legal issue as technical. Casino opponents claim the ruling could present major problems for Lago.
