Connections

Coming Up On Connections: Wednesday, August 17th

First hour: Marking one year since the Genesee Street mass shooting

Second hour: Rochester as a city for adult learning

One year ago this week, three men were killed in a drive-by shooting outside the Boys & Girls Club of Rochester. The organization will host a remembrance ceremony and plaque dedication in honor of Raekwon Manigault, Johnny Johnson, and Jonah Barley. We'll talk about healing, the impact of violence, and the good work being done at the Club. Our guests:

  • Dwayne Mahoney, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club
  • Bishop Willie Davis
  • Tamara Shepard, licensed social worker with the Rochester City School District, and alumna of the Boys & Girls Club
  • Wanya Bruce, Boys & Girls Club of Rochester’s Youth of the Year and WNY Youth of the Year

Then, maybe you've given up on learning to speak French, or fix a car, or identify a wine just by smelling it. Maybe you don't think you have time to learn how to pick out which bird is at your feeder, or how to properly use a knife in the kitchen, or how to knit. What about appreciating The Odyssey or Nietzsche? Rochester has become a city with many opportunities for adult learning. We'll focus on two organizations in particular. Our guests:

  • Danielle Raymo, founder of the Rochester Brainery
  • Kayla Carpitella, teaches knitting at the Rochester Brainery
  • Sean McKay, teaches web design and marketing at the Rochester Brainery
  • Lora Downie, teaches knife skills at the Rochester Brainery
  • Patrick Jaouen, teaches home brewing and the history of cider at the Rochester Brainery
  • Mary Barrett, chair of the Osher Council, and Osher teacher
  • Paul Blake, Osher marketing vice chair, and teacher who has co-led a course on Nietzsche
  • Joan Dupont, Osher teacher who will co-lead the “New Yorker Discussion Group”
  • David Hill, Osher teacher who will lead the “How the Odyssey Matters” course
