Coming up on Connections: Tuesday, December 13th

First hour: Debate heats up over liquid propane gas storage project near Seneca Lake

Second hour: Which American faces inspire you most?

The Cuomo administration has not yet made a decision on whether to allow a proposed expansion of a liquid propane gas facility near Seneca Lake. The out-of-state energy company involved has tried to amend its proposal in order to get it approved. Crestwood argues that the project will create a handful of new jobs while alleviating local energy supply crunches. Opponents have been vocal, arguing that the project would be a serious problem for tourism and the wine industry. In fact, Paul Hobbs, an award-winning international winemaker, has said he would put his own planned Finger Lakes wine project on hold if the gas project goes forward. We're waiting to hear back from Crestwood Energy, along with the AFL-CIO, which is supporting the project. Confirmed as guests:

  • Joseph Campbell, representing the group, Gas Free Seneca
  • Michael Warren Thomas, radio host and regional advocate

In our second hour: Local artist Todd Stahl had no idea that when he set out on a new project in 2015, it would feel so poignant when it finally debuted shortly after the presidential election. Stahl wanted to capture portraits of fifteen Americans who, in his words, "have risen up to express their personal vision and to fight for what they saw as progress." Some of the names are known in every household: Frederick Douglass, Martin Luther King, Jr., Robert F. Kennedy, Eleanor Roosevelt. Some are names that are not quite as well known: Jean-Michel Basquiat, John Muir. We'll discuss why this show has become powerful at this American moment. In studio:

  • Todd Stahl, local teacher and artist
  • Alex Gruttadaro, Makers Gallery
