Coming Up On Connections: Tuesday, August 16th

First hour: Exploring the options for Parcel 5

Second hour: Building younger public radio audiences

What should Rochester do with Parcel 5? That's the name for the site of the former Midtown Plaza, currently sitting vacant, in the heart of the city. Developers are submitting proposals, but one group is pushing for the site to remain open, developed in a thoughtful combination of green space and festival grounds. Others argue that the site is too valuable not to develop more aggressively. Our guests will discuss the possibilities surrounding one of the most important decisions Rochester leaders will make:

  • Heidi Zimmer-Meyer, president of Rochester Downtown Development Corporation
  • Benjamin Woelk, principal at Slow Road Consulting
  • Ken Sato, director of Big Picture Rochester

In our second hour: How can public radio attract younger audiences that will stay with the medium for... well, for life? That's a question with no single, easy answer, but addressing it is vital to public radio's future. We'll explore the research about millennial media consumption, as well as ways to connect. And we'll discuss the difference between "skim" and "dive," and how it relates to listening habits. Our guests:

  • Fred Jacobs, president of Jacobs Media
  • Zach Graham "King," co-owner of Makers Gallery and Studio
  • Tianna Manon, editor-in-chief of Open Mic Rochester Magazine
  • Danielle Abramson Swartz, WXXI's director of station events and special projects
  • Veronica Volk, WXXI's Great Lakes Today reporter, and co-host and producer of the podcast, Finding Tammy Jo
