Coming up on Connections: Thursday, June 12th

First hour: Citizen Koch

Second hour: Updates on medical marijuana, Medley Centre, and a conversation about the global economy

In our first hour, we talk to filmmaker Tia Lessin of the new documentary Citizen Koch. The film chronicles the rise of the Tea Party and its financial backing by the billionaire Koch brothers. Lessin will explain why she believes it's a vital look at how democracy can be threatened by big money.

Then on Thursday night at the Little Theatre, you can see the documentary for free at 6:30. Afterward, Evan will moderate a discussion. The discussion will include investigative journalist David Cay Johnston, University of Rochester political science professor Lynda Powell, and of course we'll invite comment from the audience.

In our second hour Thursday, we tackle three hot topics. The first is the state of medical marijuana. We'll explain why the Compassionate Care Act, which would give doctors the authority to prescribe marijuana, has stalled. We'll look at its chances of revival with less than a week to go in the session in Albany. We'll also talk to Joe Morelle, assembly majority leader, about why he pushed to strip Medley Centre owner Scott Congel of his coveted tax benefits. And we'll conclude with a discussion on the global economy.
