Coming Up On Connections: Monday, May 30th

http://honorflightrochester.org/

First hour: Honor Flight Rochester

Second hour: Independent Minds: At War in the Pacific

We honor veterans this Memorial Day and welcome guests from Honor Flight Rochester. The non-profit organization flies veterans from the Greater Rochester area to Washington D.C. to visit the memorials built in their honor. To date, 2,231 veterans have flown on 47 "missions."  The veterans joining us in studio share their Honor Flight experiences and reflect on their service to our nation. Our guests:

  • Major Peter Glennon, co-founder and chairman of Honor Flight Rochester and U.S. Air Force veteran
  • Corporal John Woods, Army Air Corps., WWII veteran
  • Private First Class George Haines, Army scout in the Pacific, WWII veteran
  • First Class Petty Officer Bill Diesel, U.S. Navy, Korean War veteran

In our second hour, we air a special program for Memorial Day. Independent Minds: At War in the Pacific tells the story of heroism and sacrifice by the young Marines who stormed onto the islands and fought from inside the foxholes in the bloody Pacific Campaign of World War II.  David D'Arcy hosts this compelling radio hour featuring personal testimony from the Marines and historical context from scholars. We hear how the Marines came of age during weeks and months of searing combat and how their sacrifices shaped the history of our nation. As the conflict unfolds in the Pacific, friends and relatives tell how they shouldered the burden back home. Filmmakers Steven Spielberg and actor Tom Hanks offer their views on what the war in the Pacific meant, then and now.
