Coming up on Connections: Monday, July 6th

First hour: The roots of the heroin epidemic

Second hour: The science of heroin and what we can do about it

If you missed it, Need to Know offered a remarkable report on the local heroin problem. Our Monday show expands on that theme in several ways. Typically, the second hour of the first Monday of the month is our Monthly Science Roundtable. We're using that slot to build on the heroin discussion. Michelle Faust joins me for the coverage.

FIRST HOUR

We'll discuss the roots of the modern heroin epidemic with author Sam Quinones and reporter Ben Allen.

SECOND HOUR

The science and the dangers of heroin, and what we can do about it. We'll have sound clips from Jim Wesley, supervisor of the chemistry section of the Monroe County Public Safety Laboratory. And our panel:

Olinda Ford, associate director of the harm reduction initiative at Trillium Health
Dr. Timothy Wiegand, professor of emergency medicine, University of Rochester Medical Center
Elizabeth Burek, Rochester Drug Treatment Court
