First hour: Slowing climate change through new policies and legislation
Second hour: How should climate change be taught in high schools?
If we're going to try to slow climate change, or mitigate its effects, what are our options? Right now, there are four different policy approaches under consideration by the New York State legislature. From a carbon tax to requiring clean energy, our panel explains the four bills that could still pass this year. In studio:
- Carole Camp, member of the Citizens Climate Lobby, will discuss A8372, the bill proposing a carbon tax in NYS
- Sue Hughes-Smith, lecturer at RIT, will discuss A7497, the bill to require 100% clean energy by 2030
- Barbara Grosh, member of LWV-RMA and Mothers Out Front, will discuss A7625, the bill relating to financial surety for major facilities, vessels, and railroads
- Katherine Smith, vice president of the League of Women Voters, Rochester Metropolitan Area
In our second hour, speaking of climate change, why are high schools so ineffective at teaching it? A new survey in the journal Science found that teachers spent very little time on climate change in the classroom. Many teachers say they don't feel trained well enough to teach it. Others might feel pressure because the issue has become politicized. So, how should it be taught? Our panel has experience with that question. Our guests:
