First hour: Exploring the legacy of NWA and Straight Outta Compton

Second hour: Frat signs at ODU spark allegations of "rape culture"

We explore the legacy of the group NWA, which is back in focus with the hit movie Straight Outta Compton. Dr. Dre in particular has been criticized for alleged violence against women, and for the group's misogyny. Supporters say that NWA captured the struggle that the black community faces with police departments, which has become a national flashpoint. Our panel debates all of that and more. In studio:

Natasha Chen Christensen, chair of anthropology, history, political science and sociology at Monroe Community College
William Cleeton-Gandino, college student and rapper
Marquette Loyd, social activist
Jason Peck, modern languages and cultures professor at the University of Rochester, and amateur hip-hop historian
Gregory Brandon, aka DJ G-Nyce

Did you see the Old Dominion University frat banners that became international news? On freshman move-in day, Sigma Nu hung banners that read, "Rowdy and fun / Hope your daughter is ready for a good time." Another read, "Freshman daughter drop off," and the last banner read, "Go ahead and drop off Mom too." The banners sparked outrage, and critics say they encapsulate "rape culture." Others say the response has been too harsh, and the banners were just meant to be a joke. We'll discuss it with guests on both sides.
