CityGate Moving Forward

Demolition began Monday on an old children's detention center to make way for retailer Costco to bring its first store to Western New York.

Representatives from the city, state and county, and the developer were on hand for the announcement.

The project had stalled, but county lawmakers last month authorized the capital budget for the project, which included a state-approved plan to move the children in the detention center to a location in Rush.

Meanwhile, developer Anthony J. Costello says Costco has signed an agreement, putting down "substantial, non-refundable money," to bring a store here.

Costco will anchor CityGate, which also includes apartments overlooking the canal, a hotel, and commercial and retail space.

Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren says she's working on efforts to make employment opportunities in this project available for city residents.

It's expected to create up to 300 jobs.

Costco is expected to open its doors in the fall.
