It’s been 15 years since there was a permanent DMV office in downtown Rochester, but that won’t be the case by the end of the year.

East Main Street will soon become a one-stop shop for traffic and driving needs. Mayor Lovely Warren, along with Monroe County Clerk Adam Bello announced a new DMV location is being built above the parking violations bureau

Bello says it’s an issue of equity and access.

"We can’t continue to ask people who have the greatest challenges in getting transportation and identification to also face the greatest barriers to accessing these services in the county."

He said the current mobile office was just an interim solution almost two decades ago.

Warren says the new office is a block away from the transit center and a parking garage.

"This is about bringing opportunity to the residents of the city of Rochester that many of the people in our county have been able to have for years."

A new US Social Security Office is also being added to the building.

Assembly Majority Leader Morelle secured a $425,000 state grant to fund the construction costs.

This new office will offer all regular services and be open 8:30 am to 4:30pm Monday through Friday.
