With the wicked winter weather in full swing, the City of Rochester is urging residents and visitors to use extra caution on roads as the snow falls.
Drivers are reminded to give snow plows room when they encounter them on roadways. According to Commissioner Norman Jones, of the department of environmental services, this works best when everyone obeys parking regulations and restrictions.
“If it dictates that you move your vehicles on the other side of the street by 7:00 p.m., please do so,” Jones said, “Because if you don't, it means we don't have the ability to do a clear pass and open up that street completely.”
Vehicles that are illegally parked are subject to ticketing and towing.
The City is also asking residents and business owners to help keep sidewalks and fire hydrants clear of ice and snow, by “adopting” a fire hydrant.
“That way if there is ever a fire emergency, the fire fighters aren't spending their time removing snow from the fire hydrant. They are actually hooking up to the fire hydrant and putting out the fire,” Jones said.
An interactive online map will help residents locate the fire hydrant closest to their home or business. Citizens can also track plowing activity in real time using Plow Trax, the City’s new web and mobile application.
