City Council Moves Ahead With Study Of Performing Arts Center

TWC News

Rochester City Council on Tuesday evening approved moving ahead with a feasibility study on a downtown performing arts center. The vote was 7 to 1, with Councilwoman Carolee Conklin casting the only opposing vote.

The study would cost $211,000.  The city and Monroe County would each chip in $30,000; $100,000 would come from the state, and reportedly, about $50,000 would likely come from the Rochester Broadway Theatre League.

The amount of the city’s contribution has fluctuated. Originally, Mayor Lovely Warren wanted $111,000, then she said that County Executive Maggie Brooks agreed to pick up $81,000.

But on Tuesday, Brooks said she would try to get approval for the county contributing $30,000.

Among the factors the study would consider will be potential sites for a performing arts center as well as its economic viability.
