Churches Work to Help Youth During Summer

Local churches are joining forces this summer in an effort to reach out to city school kids.

The Reverend Roosevelt Dixon is the senior pastor of Grace Unity Fellowship Church. He says he’s working with Upper Room Church and Full Gospel for a “Save Our Children” festival later in the summer.

Dixon says health vendors will be available for families and more than 200 backpacks will be handed out to get kids to get them motivated for the new school year, "We're reaching out to people because we want to make a difference in the community. And somebody has to take the lead or someone must become the drum majorette to make sure that this gets done."

Dixon says he plans to reach out to Superintendent Bolgen Vargas during the summer to discuss ways to get his church and other African American churches in the city more involved with city school kids.

This is the 14th year for the “Save Our Children” festival which will take place in August.
