Cheap Gas Spurs Millions to Travel this Weekend

AAA projects more than 38 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend.

That's the second-highest Memorial Day travel volume on record, and the most since 2005.

34 million will go by car, and Public and Governmental Affairs Manager for AAA of Western and Central New York, Elizabeth Carey, says we're paying about $2.39 a gallon in Rochester for gas, and that's down from $2.78 a year ago.

"Gas prices are one of the main reasons that people are traveling, a lot more people seeing those lower prices, even though they were higher than they were at the start of the year, they're much lower than one year ago. That's inspiring people to take that road trip," she says.

Since most people are going by car, Carey it's important to make sure your car is road-trip ready.

"AAA expects to get about 350 thousand calls for emergency road service over the holiday weekend.  And some of the things that we get calls for, the most common, are simple things you can avoid," she says.

The top three calls AAA gets are for tires, batteries, and keys locked in the car.

Carey suggests inspecting tires for tread wear, checking the battery, and keep a spare set of keys with you.

If you're going by air, some 2.6 million Americans will be flying with you.

AAA recommends travelers get to the airport 2 hours early, and check the TSA's website for the latest airport security rules.
