Canandaigua Road Bridge in Macedon Reopens

After six years, the Canandaigua Road Bridge connecting Route 31F and Route 31 in the town of Macedon has reopened.

It was carrying around 56 hundred vehicles a day before it was shut down in 2010 because of its deteriorating condition.

Regional Director for the state Department of Transportation, Kevin Bush, says they replaced the 1912 one-lane truss bridge with a brand new two-lane structure.

“We’re excited it is no longer a one-lane bridge, it’s widened to two lanes. It’s longer than the old bridge, which allowed us to provide a continuous Erie Canalway Trail under the bridge,” he said.

Bush says the new bridge has accommodations for bikes and pedestrians, and more room for boaters on the canal.

"The old bridge had an open grated steel deck, the new bridge has wide shoulders for bikes and also a five foot sidewalk,” he said.

Bush says they took apart the historic old truss and hope to use it on another crossing on the canal at some point.

He adds the money the DOT saved on this project by not replacing the truss will be invested in other canal bridges.
