Brockport Post Office Renamed For Fallen Soldier

militarytimes.com

Congresswoman Louise Slaughter and members of the family of a fallen soldier gathered in Brockport on Saturday for the formal designation of the Brockport Post Office as the Staff Sergeant Nicholas J. Reid Post Office Building.

Reid enlisted in the U.S. Army in 2006 as an Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician, two years after he graduated from Brockport High School. He served with the 53rd Ordnance Company of the 3rd Ordnance Battalion. He was on his second tour of duty to Afghanistan when he was wounded on December 9, 2013 by an improvised explosive device. He died on December 13, 2013 at a hospital in Germany.  He was posthumously awarded the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart.

Legislation to designate the 14 Main Street Post Office in the Village of Brockport as the Staff Sergeant Nicholas J. Reid Post Office Building was introduced by Congresswoman Slaughter and Senator  Kirsten Gillibrand in early April 2013. The legislation passed the U.S. House of Representatives in March 2014 and the U.S. Senate in late May 2014. The bill was signed into law by President Barack Obama in early June 2014.
