Blue-Green Algae Now Found In At Least 3 Area Lakes

www.co.ontario.ny.us/publichealth

The Ontario County Health Department says that the presence of blue-green algae has been confirmed in parts of Honeoye, Seneca and Canandaigua Lakes.

Officials say the “algal blooms” can make water look greenish and form thick scums on the surface. When people or animals are exposed to the algae, they may experience eye, nose, throat or skin irritation. People who drink water that contains the blue-green algae may develop diarrhea or vomiting.

In Canandaigua, Kershaw Park Swimming Beach was closed on Thursday.

Health officials say look for the presence of the algae blooms before participating in water activities. They say it is not unusual for the blue-green algae to grow rapidly in late summer.
