The Rochester area and much of the Northeast starts 2018 with a continuation of the bitter cold.
There is a Winter Weather Advisory for Monroe and Wayne Counties from 1:00 p.m. Monday until 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, with the possibility of 2 to 6 inches in the most persistent bands of lake effect snow. News 8 Meteorologist Josh Nichols says there will be lesser amounts south of the Thruway with 6 inches or more near Lake Ontario in some areas.
There is a Wind Chill Advisory until Monday at 10:00a.m., with the wind making it feel like 10 to 20 below zero at times.
The forecast calls for a high of 20 on Tuesday, and 22 on Wednesday, falling to 15 on Thursday and only near 2 degrees on Friday.
Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren urged residents to prepare for the bitterly cold weather and stay informed.
City residents are asked to keep their sidewalks clear of snow and ice and help keep the fire hydrants clear.
Rochester’s New Year’s Eve celebration went on as planned, with a number of people showing up Sunday for the free ice skating at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. park.
There was also a family celebration at the convention center and the annual fireworks display, dedicated to Frederick Douglass in recognition of his 200th birthday, on Sunday night.
It was also the first year the ride-hailing services Uber and Lyft were in operation in Rochester on New Year's, and a number of revelers were expected to take advantage the their availability.
